Gameboys Popularity

Two Factors which Made Game Boy Popular

Game Boy, as of the writing of this article, is around 22 years old. Some 22 years ago, Nintendo released the world famous Game Boy. The Japanese, being lovers of advanced technology and advanced games, readily accepted Game boy into their lives. Indeed, upon its release, millions of Game Boy items were bought by the Japanese people at the price of around $ 95 a piece. At that time, this was pretty expensive considering how much the dollar value has expanded today. Indeed, back then, the Game Boy merely offered four games including the Super Mario, Alleyway, and two others. Despite this, the console was so darn popular. So popular, in fact, that this humble number of four eventually ballooned to a couple of hundreds when the demand for new games arose.

In that same year, Nintendo announced that it would expand globally first with a market in the United States. With a price tag of $90 each, the Game Boy became an instant hit. As a matter of fact, a million units of Game Boy were sold on its first Christmas season alone. One of the most important and crucial reasons that led to this success was the creation of the Tetris game. Although created with simplicity, gamers were hooked to it simply because of the logical challenge that it presented.

In this article, we are going to mention two of the things that led to the immortality of the Nintendo and of Game Boy as a marketing name. The first such factor has already been mentioned, but it is noteworthy to mention it again: Tetris. Basically, the game is, well, very simple and very basic. However, experts believe that it is precisely of this simplicity that people have come to love the game. Furthermore, the simplicity of the graphics was just a perfect fit for the then simple graphic capabilities of the console. Thanks to this game, millions of Game Boy units were sold and bought in the United States alone, and millions more were sold all over the world.

The second reason why Game Boy became a lasting success was its battery. Basically, with four AA batteries, the original Nintendo console could last between 10-20 hours. You could not say the same to the early competitors at that time.

Atari, for example, was a very high tech gaming console offering colored screen displays. Indeed, Game Boy was far from it. However, even if you had the best batteries, you could only expect to last around 1-2 hours at most. In the beginning, Nintendo had always focused their energy on creating a console that would be energy efficient. Thus, they did not intend to present high-end displays which would eat up energy. This was a gamble, of course.

This gamble, apparently, worked well. People realized that they would waste a lot of cash buying batteries for the other consoles when then could spend twice less if they had the Game Boy. As such, the console’s popularity rose even further.

Today, Game Boy no longer offers simplistic displays. Indeed, the latest development in the Nintendo displays is something that would be able to compete even with the very best consoles out there. Still, people continue to buy Game Boy because of the fact that it still embraces the energy efficiency. Apparently, people nowadays are more aware of the need to save money.
