Kirby made his first appearance in Kirby’s dreamland, which was the first in its series of games. Kirby is a pink colored ball or rather a round creature who is a resident of dreamland on the planet Pop Star. He is a young male and is a lovable character. He has large red feet and stubby arms. He has a positive outlook and loves to eat, sleep, color and play. He has certain abilities with which he combats his opponents in the game. He can walk, run, float, fly, inhale and can swallow his enemies whole. He can then attack others by spitting out the swallowed enemies as star projectiles. He derives his strength by eating maxim tomatoes. The entire game revolves around him as he is the protagonist and has various levels which you have to win in order to reach the next level.

Kirby’s dreamland was developed for the Game Boy hand held gaming console which was monochromatic and hence Kirby’s original pink color was not visible. Moreover the game is two dimensional, allowing the players to move only left, right, up and down. In this game dreamland faces a food crisis created by the villain King Dedede. He steals the food as well as the sparkling star which is harvested to produce food. Subsequently Kirby sets out to reclaim dreamland’s food supply and sparkling star and also teach the villain king a lesson.

The game has 5levels: Green Greens, Castle Lololo, float islands, Bubbly clouds and Mt. Dedede.  The player has to defeat enemies and collect items to gain points. When enough points are accumulated, the players are granted an extra life. At the end of each successful level, Kirby moves towards his goal of defeating king Dedede by jumping over obstacles and tackling enemies in his path. To assist Kirby in his goal he has the power to inhale his enemies, whom he can either swallow to gain energy or he can spit it out to attack another enemy. Kirby can make use of mint leaves and spicy curry throughout the game and spit fireballs and air puffs respectively to deal with bothersome enemies. On successful completion of all the levels the players have the option to play an extra game by pressing up, A and select. The extra game is presumably tougher than the main game and hence more challenging. After completion of the extra game, the player can press down, b and select to access the config mode and change how much vitality and lives Kirby will start with when the game begins, additionally the player can listen to the game’s music and sound effects.

Kirby’s dreamland, after its debut on Game Boy hand held console, received average rating and is the 13th best Game boy game. Naysayers criticized it for being too simple. Kirby’s creator, Masahiro Sakurai, said that it was a beginner’s game and the game was so designed with the intention of keeping it simple. The game may get over within 30 minutes, but within that limited span of time it offers action packed fun filled experience. It can throw you enough challenge when you least expect it. The characters, the game plan and the music of the game were a novelty when it was first released back in the nineties during the era of gaming platformers. It was rereleased in 2011 for the 3DS virtual console.
