Nintendo 3DS – The Good vs The Bad
The latest model, Nintendo 3DS, did not initially sell well during the first six months from its launch. The company then decided to slashed the price from the original $249.99 to only $169.99 that helped boost its sales. Did people find the product too expensive at $249.99 so they hesitated with their purchase until Nintendo lowered the price? Is there something else that’s holding them back.
The Nintendo 3DS is far from being perfect so there are bound to be glitches in the design and system. What’s the real deal with the Nintendo 3DS? The question remains if those glitches diminishes the value of the Nintendo 3DS and would make consumers opt for its rival, the PlayStation Vita.
The Good:
The price is definitely a big lure especially for a 3D console that can play augmented reality games as opposed to the PlayStation Vita, which retails at $249 that only does augmented reality.
The ability to view photos watch videos in 3D without needing 3D glasses is definitely amazing not to mention having the ability to capture your own 3D photos and videos.
The screen is definitely better in comparison to its predecessor with its 64-bit color display.
The ability to play augmented reality is just too cool not to include in the list.
The Nintendo 3DS comes with an extra 2 GB external SD memory card.
The Bad:
Battery life has significantly decreased to approximately four to five hours.
Inferior 3D visuals in some games can cause slight discomfort including nausea and headache.
Poor collection on the eShop library does not give its users many game options to download however; it is backward compatible with previous Nintendo DS games.
The charging cable that doesn’t really serve any purpose since you can charge your Nintendo 3DS directly to the AC outlet. The cradle is of no use if you have a casing for your console and putting it on the cradle does not let you play unlike if you plug it directly to the AC outlet.
Inefficient web browsing capability.
The web browsing issue is really not a big issue since you have your laptops or smartphone for that and the charging cable concern is more of a rant than an actual dilemma. So that leaves the issue of battery life, eShop library and the inferior 3D visuals in some games.
The inferior 3D visual will definitely improve over time however this criticism does not encompass all 3D videos as some are exemplary. The Nintendo 3D application currently allows you to download free 3D video and you’d get to appreciate the Nintendo 3DS magic. The current pitiful state of the eShop library can also be remedied soon enough after Nintendo throws in some classic titles there.
The biggest let down is probably the battery but that’s perhaps due to the fact that Nintendo had set the bar high with its previous portable consoles. It has been barely a year since it’s release and maybe we can see some development in the games and 3D section to make up for the let down in the battery.
Nintendo has currently passed the torch from Gameboy to Nintendo when it announced that the Game Boy Micro would be the end of the Game Boy franchise. It will be a tough act to follow but Nintendo DS series shows a lot of promise and will definitely still be a force to reckon with.
